Cycling along quiet country roads with Texas longhorns grazing in bluebonnet-covered fields is one of many perks on this Texas-sized tour. Beyond the beautiful scenery you’ll experience a unique combination of rich history, great food and Southern Hospitality. This 7-day tour is filled with exceptional cycling in the hilly countryside and evenings exploring Fredericksburg’s museums, art galleries and historic buildings on Main Street.

Itinerary

Willkommen to Fredericksburg, Texas. Established in 1846 as a German colony, Fredericksburg has been excellently preserved and has 700 historically significant structures in and around town. The conservative German culture of the area has slowly been adapting to modern times due to a booming wine industry and increasing tourism. What hasn't changed is the warm southern welcome you will receive, both in town and in the surrounding countryside as you explore the region by bike.

Meals:  Nil

Today you’ll kick-off your cycling trip exploring a local treasure, the Willow City Loop. As you cycle out of Fredericksburg the terrain transforms from gently rolling pastoral hills into a dramatic landscape of canyons, meandering streams and phenomenal panoramic views. You’ll ride through some of the oldest and most unique geology in central Texas. Deep Canyons carved by Coal Creek are picturesque, and during springtime the meadows ablaze in color with Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush. When you return to town, grab a Shiner Bock at a traditional Biergarten to celebrate the beginning of a great adventure.

Meals:  B

Today you’ve got more stunning cycling through the heart of ranch country as you ride out to the tiny, historic town of Doss. Your ride takes you on rural country roads along streams and past cattle resting in the shade. Take a lunch break at the Hill Top Café, and if you’re lucky you’ll catch some live music at this local gathering spot. Enjoy a lunch made from fresh garden veggies and local ingredients (don’t forget to save room for their homemade desserts!) before you cycle back to Fredericksburg along quiet country roads. Take the evening to explore art galleries and antique shops while you try and decide what type of cuisine you’re in the mood for this evening. Texas BBQ? Traditional brats in a biergarten? We promise you one thing, you won’t go to bed hungry in this town.

Meals:  B

The tiny town of Luckenbach, made famous by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, is our destination today. On the way to Luckenbach, you'll visit one of Fredericksburg's most stunning wineries, Grape Creek Vineyards and its newly opened Heath Sparkling Wines. You’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to Tuscany the instant you enter Grape Creek. Sample award-winning wines and the first sparkling wine produced in Texas as you take in your surroundings at this stunning vineyard. The next stop is a place made famous by country music like the song “Where Everybody's Somebody, in Luckenbach, Texas." In this tiny town you’ll find a real saloon and the famous dancehall, a sacred institution among local two-steppers. Find a picnic table under the shade of an oak tree and grab a drink at the bar or some classic Texas grub at the Feed Lot before the ride back to Fredericksburg.

Meals:  B

Today's ride will take you to Enchanted Rock, home of the largest pink granite dome in the U.S, covering a full square mile and rising 425 feet above the ground. It’s not called Hill Country for nothing! Plan to park your bike and climb to the summit where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views from this 'batholith' said to have formed a billion years ago. Returning to town will lead you through more of Texas’s stunning ranch land on hilly rural roads. This evening, stroll by Marketplatz, a plaza located in the centre of the city where you will always find something happening. A visit to one of the local winery’s tasting rooms located on Maine street is a great option while deciding on where to dine.

Meals:  B

Johnson National Historical Park, homestead of the 36th U.S President. As you cycle the park’s many bike paths, you’ll pass historic buildings, buffalo herds, and longhorns grazing in vast ranch land. If you’re thirsty, take a quick detour to Ab Astris Winery to taste some of the boutique wines before you enter the cycling trail through LBJ’s ranch. On your way back to Fredericksburg, don’t miss Burg’s corner, a family-owned operation full of local treats including fresh peaches and pecans. If you’re in the mood for more history when you get back to town, explore the incredible National Museum of the Pacific War’s 55,000 square feet of exhibit space spread over three galleries in the heart of Fredericksburg.

Meals:  B

This morning, enjoy a hearty breakfast before preparing for checkout and departure. After a great week of cycling, it's time to say Auf Wiedersehen – see you again!

Suitability

Moderate to Challenging ***This trip follows routes that are paved and relatively easy but due to the nature of the terrain, some hilly sections exist requiring extra effort. Where possible, we utilize bike paths, roads with bike lanes and side streets. This trip requires some exploration on streets shared by motorists and we recommend that you are a confident rider with experience. *** Self guided walking or cycling requires individuals to use problem solving skills, be adaptable and have a keen eye. It is recommended that you are comfortable map reading, referring to route notes and that you have a good sense of direction (or are willing to work on improving this!). Cyclists will be expected to know how to fix a flat tire and make basic adjustments to their bicycles using the included repair kit. Sometimes route finding, losing your way, finding it again and asking the locals for help is all part of the adventure. If you’ve never been on a self guided trip, after the first couple of days you will get the hang of if as the vast majority of our first time travellers attest. Please be assured that our written material issued to you for route finding is updated regularly and we provide a 7-day service hotline in the event of any problems.
