Moderate. Self-guided walking or cycling requires individuals to use problem solving skills, be adaptable and have a keen eye. It is recommended that you are comfortable referring to GPS maps and route notes and that you have a good sense of direction (or are willing to work on improving this!). This trip is best suited for hikers with a moderate level of fitness who are comfortable walking 5 to 8 miles per day on uneven high-desert terrain. Daily distances range from 5 to 8 miles with approximately 1,200 feet of elevation gain, and include a mix of rocky, sometimes exposed sections and slick rock canyon paths. Trails feature packed dirt, rock shelves, and steep, uneven steps typical of Sedona’s red rock landscape, and sure footing is essential throughout. Sedona’s trails offer little sun protection, so carrying a minimum of 3 liters of water per person per day along with appropriate sun coverage is essential. Approximately 35 percent of the route follows residential streets and town pathways that connect trail networks and provide the transition between viewpoints and trailheads. You will carry only a daypack each day as luggage is transferred for you between accommodations. While no technical climbing experience is required, comfort on uneven terrain, strong sun protection, and readiness for warm, dry conditions will make the journey more enjoyable.
